What MJ Taught Me About Nourishment

Many of you have asked about MJ's wellness routine, so I thought I'd take some time to write it all down.

If you know me, you know one thing about me: I love dogs. I always have.

In fact, when I was two years old, I was bitten in the face by a dog. Even after that, I wasn't afraid. I went right back to loving them with my whole heart.

To me, bringing a dog into your life is a commitment. When you choose to care for them, you do everything you can to give them the best life possible.

So when MJ became sick while I was in Belize, I was devastated. When I returned home, I learned she had a large mass in her abdomen. The veterinarian recommended a medication that cost about $10 a day. I started her on it, but after a week or so, something inside me told me to look deeper. I also knew that, financially, it wasn't a long-term solution for me.

So I did what yoga has taught me to do.

I went back to the source.

Our bodies are constantly responding to what we feed them. What goes in must eventually come out.

At first, I switched MJ to a canned food for sensitive skin. But then I realized that preparing fresh food at home would actually cost less over time, while allowing me complete control over every ingredient. It took more effort, but it also allowed me to pay close attention to what helped her thrive.

The recipe I've settled on has made an incredible difference.

Her digestion has improved dramatically, her coat is soft and shiny, her eyes are bright, and she has so much more energy than I ever expected.

One of the most unexpected gifts has been what it's done for me.

Preparing healthy meals for MJ has inspired me to take better care of myself. Watching how profoundly food affects her has reminded me that it affects us just as deeply. I've become more intentional about eating vegetables, getting enough protein, and taking the time to prepare nourishing meals.

She has been my greatest teacher in more ways than I can count.

Before I share what I feed her, I want to be clear that I am not a veterinarian or a canine nutritionist. This is simply what has worked well for MJ after lots of observation, research, and conversations with our veterinarian. Every dog has different needs, so always consult your veterinarian before making significant changes to your dog's diet.

MJ's Daily Meals

MJ eats this meal twice each day.

  • 1 hard-boiled egg, peeled

  • Boiled salmon to bring the total protein (including the egg) to 200 grams

  • 100 grams cooked basmati rice

  • 120 grams roasted sweet potato

  • 72 grams zucchini

After preparing her food, I also add these supplements:
