When students ask me what they really need for a home yoga practice, my answer is usually the same:
You don't need everything.
A consistent practice will always matter more than having the "perfect" equipment.
That said, there are a handful of products I reach for again and again because they help make my practice more comfortable, more accessible, and more enjoyable. Whether you're just beginning your yoga journey or you've been practicing for years, these are the items I personally recommend.

1. A Supportive Yoga Mat
Your yoga mat is the foundation of your practice.
A quality mat provides the grip and cushioning you need to move with confidence while helping you feel stable in standing poses and comfortable on the floor.
Of all the yoga equipment you can buy, this is the one item I believe is worth investing in. A quality mat doesn't just make your practice more comfortable—it helps you feel more stable, improves your grip, and allows you to engage your muscles more effectively. It can be the difference between simply going through the motions and truly connecting with your practice.
When choosing a mat, I look for:
Excellent grip without feeling sticky
Enough cushioning to support the joints
Durable materials that will last for years

2. Yoga Blocks
If I could only recommend one prop besides a mat, it would be yoga blocks.
Blocks aren't just for beginners—they're one of the best tools for improving alignment and making poses work for your unique body.
I use them to:
Bring the floor closer
Support balance poses
Improve posture
Add comfort during restorative yoga
Build strength with better alignment
I tell my students all the time: using a block isn't "making a pose easier." It's helping you practice with better alignment so your body gets the full benefit of the pose.

3. A Yoga Strap
Many people think a yoga strap is only for increasing flexibility.
In reality, it's one of the best tools for creating proper alignment without forcing your body into a position it isn't ready for.
A strap helps you:
Reach your feet comfortably
Stretch without straining
Improve shoulder mobility
Maintain healthy posture
Remember, flexibility isn't about how far you can reach—it's about moving safely and with awareness.

4. My Favorite Yoga Anatomy Book
Understanding why a pose feels the way it does can completely change your practice.
A good anatomy book helps you appreciate how muscles, joints, breath, and alignment all work together. Whether you're a yoga teacher or simply curious about your own body, this is one of the resources I return to again and again.

5. Essential Oils for Savasana
Savasana is one of the most important parts of a yoga practice. It's the time when your body begins to integrate everything you've just done.
Sometimes adding a calming scent can help signal to your nervous system that it's safe to relax.
One of my favorite rituals is making cool lemon and lavender towels for Savasana. I simply add a few drops of each essential oil to cool water, soak small towels, wring them out, and place them in the refrigerator before class. At the end of practice, students can place the towel over their eyes, throat, or chest. Knowing that little treat is waiting at the end of class makes Savasana feel even more restorative.
When I need an extra boost of energy before my own practice, I also love placing a drop or two of peppermint oil on my wrists or chest.
My favorite oils include:
Lavender
Frankincense
Peppermint
I personally use doTERRA essential oils because they're known for their extensive quality testing and commitment to purity.

6. A Yoga Bolster
A yoga bolster can completely transform a restorative practice.
It allows the body to relax into supported shapes so your muscles can soften, your breath can deepen, and your nervous system can truly unwind.
I especially love using one for:
Supported Child's Pose
Reclined Bound Angle
Legs Up the Wall
Gentle supported backbends
Savasana
I've had my Bean Products yoga bolster for over eight years, and it's still one of my favorite pieces of yoga equipment. It has held up beautifully through years of teaching and personal practice.

7. Dumbbells for Strength & Stability
Strength training has become an important part of my movement practice.
Adding light dumbbells to yoga can help improve bone health, increase stability, and support healthy joints—especially for women over 40.
That's why I include weights in many of my Yoga & Strength classes. Building strength and mobility together creates a body that's not only more flexible but also more resilient for everyday life.

8. Comfortable Leggings
The best leggings are the ones you forget you're wearing.
These are my favorite budget-friendly leggings because they remind me of Lululemon without the high price tag. They stay in place, feel supportive, and even have pockets.
When choosing leggings, I look for ones that:
Stay in place
Stretch comfortably
Aren't see-through
Feel supportive without feeling restrictive
When you're comfortable, it's much easier to stay focused on your breath instead of adjusting your clothes throughout class.

Final Thoughts
Yoga isn't about collecting equipment.
It's about creating a practice that helps you feel more connected to your body, your breath, and yourself.
These are the products I personally use and recommend because they've supported my practice for years. If you're building a home yoga space, I hope this list helps you choose tools that will support you, too.
